Jersey Sizing Across 6 Leagues: The Real Fit Guide

Jersey Sizing Across 6 Leagues: The Real Fit Guide-FKV
Quick answer: there is no universal “medium.” An NFL medium is built to sit over shoulder pads, a soccer medium is cut like a second skin, and an NHL medium quietly assumes you are wearing a hoodie underneath. Measure one jersey you already love, then match it league by league — the chart below is the same one we use inside the vault.

Sizing questions make up nearly half the messages our support desk gets, and almost all of them come from the same misunderstanding: treating “medium” as a universal constant. It isn't. Each league's kit was engineered for a different body, a different climate and a different sport — and the fan versions inherit all of it.

Why does a medium fit differently in every league?

Because the athletes' versions do. A football jersey was designed around armor; a soccer shirt around a sprinter's torso at full sprint; a hockey sweater around base layers in a cold rink. When you buy the fan edition, you buy that DNA. Here is how each league's cut actually behaves on a regular human:

LeagueCut profileReal-world advice
NFLBoxy through the chest and shoulders, built for padsTrue to size for the classic look; size down one for a streetwear fit
NBALong and loose with a swingman drapeTrue to size; tall-friendly, generous length
MLBButton-up, athletic but straightTrue to size; roomy enough to layer a tee under
NHLRoomy everywhere, assumes a hoodie underneathSize down one if wearing solo in warm weather
NCAAVaries by program template (football vs hoops vs baseball)Check the product chart — do not assume your other college size
SoccerSlim European athletic cut, tapered waistSize up one for a US casual fit — the #1 adjustment we recommend
International-break reading: slim European cut is exactly what Norway’s golden generation wears into Porto this Sunday - our Portugal vs Norway preview covers the form, the absences and where the flag-cross shirts fit into it all.

How do you measure a jersey you already own?

The single most reliable sizing method needs no size chart at all — just a jersey you love and a tape measure. Lay it flat and take three numbers:

  1. Pit to pit — straight across the chest, armpit seam to armpit seam. This is the number that decides fit.
  2. Length — from the highest point of the collar to the hem.
  3. Shoulder — seam to seam across the back.

Then compare those numbers — not the letter on the tag — against the measurements in our six-league size guide. A two-inch difference in pit-to-pit is a full size in most leagues.

Which leagues should you size up in — and which size down?

If you only remember three rules from this guide, make them these:

  • Size UP in soccer. The athletic European block runs one step slim for US buyers. When in doubt, up.
  • Size DOWN in hockey (worn solo). The cut assumes layers. No hoodie, no need for the extra room.
  • Stay TRUE in football, basketball and baseball — these are cut for the stands already, and the drape is part of the look.
Buying across leagues? A fan who wears a large in an NFL game jersey typically wants an XL in a soccer replica and can drop to a medium in an NHL breakaway. Same body, three letters — that is normal, and it is why the league chart matters more than the tag.
New kits, old measuring tape: City's 26/27 range runs a gradient home shirt and a fan-designed third kit - both cut the same as recent Puma seasons. The full breakdown (and which shirt is which) is in Not Your Typical City. Women's cuts are sized on chest inches - the full chart is in the women's fit guide.

Frequently asked questions

I'm between sizes — which way should I go?

It depends on the league, not your gut. Soccer: size up, the European athletic cut forgives nothing. Hockey: size down if you will wear it solo. Football, baseball and basketball: go bigger — a jersey is outerwear, and the extra half inch reads as drape, not sloppiness.

Do soccer jerseys really run small for US buyers?

Yes — this is the single most common sizing surprise in the vault. Club replicas are cut on a European athletic block, one full step slimmer than a US tee. If you usually wear a US medium and want a relaxed fit, order the large. If you want the player look, stay true.

Do women's and youth jerseys follow the same charts?

No — women's cuts are shaped, not just smaller, and youth sizes run on age bands that vary by league. Always use the specific chart on the size guide page for the cut you are buying, not the adult men's chart.

What if the jersey doesn't fit when it arrives?

Swap it. Every FKV order carries 30-day free returns and exchanges, and size swaps are the most common — and most welcome — request we handle. Keep the tags on, don't wash it, and start the exchange from our returns page.

Do custom name-and-number jerseys fit the same as blanks?

Yes — customization happens on the same base garment, so the size chart applies identically. The only difference is planning: custom work adds 3–7 working days before dispatch, so order a size you are sure of and order early for gift deadlines.

Will my jersey shrink in the wash?

Performance polyester barely shrinks — but heat destroys namesets and numbers long before the fabric changes size. Cold wash, inside out, air dry. Our jersey care guide has the full routine plus a stain playbook.
