What matchday 1 did to the table
The new format gives every club eight league-phase games, so no single result ends a campaign. But matchday 1 did sort the field into two groups: the clubs that banked a win, and the sixteen that did not. The scorelines were unusually lopsided - PSG beat Slovan Bratislava 6-1, Bayern Munich beat Bodo/Glimt 5-0, Barcelona beat Feyenoord 5-1, and Manchester United, Como and Borussia Dortmund all won by two or more.

Manchester City vs PSG is the one to clear your evening for
City opened with a controlled 2-0 win at Porto and PSG opened by putting six past Slovan Bratislava. Both arrive unbeaten, and under the new format a win here does not just add three points - it removes a direct rival from the race for a top-eight finish and a bye into the round of 16. That is the structural change worth understanding: the league phase rewards beating the teams around you far more than it rewards beating the weak ones.
Roma vs Real Madrid, and why matchday 2 is harder than matchday 1
Roma opened with a 1-1 draw at Fenerbahce; Real Madrid edged Inter 2-1. Both need a win to stay inside the top eight, and neither is playing a team it can expect to outclass. The same applies to Atletico Madrid vs Manchester United and Galatasaray vs Barcelona - three fixtures where the away side is the favourite and the home crowd is the equaliser.
The clubs that cannot afford another defeat
Sixteen clubs lost on matchday 1. Most of them have a winnable matchday 2, but a few do not, and another defeat would leave them needing a strong second half of the league phase:
- Inter Milan lost 2-1 at Real Madrid and now host Club Brugge, who pushed Aston Villa close in a 3-2 defeat.
- Napoli lost 0-1 at home to Arsenal and travel to Villarreal, who also lost.
- RB Leipzig were beaten 4-1 by Como and now face PSV Eindhoven, who drew with Shakhtar.
- Atletico Madrid lost at Liverpool and now host Manchester United, who won 4-0.
- Porto lost 0-2 at home to City and now go to Real Betis, who beat Lille away.
